What To Expect At Your Indianapolis In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

As you start the window treatment buying process, some companies, like Sunburst, send out a rep for an in-home consultation. By bringing samples to you, we can present how different window treatments would look with your decor. Now you can make an informed decision by seeing how each window treatment looks in your own room.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how will bringing samples to your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Sunburst regularly performs these in-home consultations, and here’s what you should expect at your appointment.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Start by making an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already can picture the perfect coverings for you window, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to bring you a variety of options available for your preferred choice. We will also show alternatives, so you can know that your choice matches your vision.

After we come to your house, we’ll sit down and talk about what you are looking for in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll pay special attention to hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also ask about how the room is used and what ambiance you are trying to attain. We want to execute your final vision, so the more you tell us about your needs, the better.

You may have to see many different window treatments and compare each window treatment against each other. Most clients want to try out a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the perfect stain to match the walls. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the shutter, shade, or blind, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll get percise measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows throughout the house—even if you only need to fit treatments for some of your windows. We do this because most of our customers ask to get future shutters or blinds without another consultation. Before we leave, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are confident that Sunburst will perform professional in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment rep. After all, the quality of your sales representative reflects the quality of the window treatments.

First, your salesperson should treat your home with respect. He or she should arrive when promised, with all samples requested, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your consultant should always bring product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

When it comes to price, you should expect a full written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scribbled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And never accept a quote without window measurement. You should always know how much the final bill will cost you. If a quote ever seems sketchy or unreasonable, don’t be afraid to ask for references and search for the company’s online reviews.
