What Happens With Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

Bill Burke

Before you determine what window treatment to order, some companies, like Sunburst, start out with an in-home consultation. By bringing the treatments to you, we can present how various window coverings would work in your room. Now you can make an informed decision by visualizing how each window treatment looks in your own room.

But what actually goes on during an in-home consultation? And how will bringing samples to your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Every shutter and window treatment company may have different procedures for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will get during your Sunburst visit.

Walking Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

Start by making an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already can picture the perfect coverings for you window, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make it a point to bring you some options for your preferred choice. We will also show alternatives, so you can know that your choice matches your vision.

After we come to your house, we’ll sit down and talk about what you need in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll discuss hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your consultant will also want to know how the room is used and what ambiance you are trying to attain. The primary objective is to imagine what your decor will ultimately look like with the coverings installed.

You may have to see many different window treatments until we find the best window treatment for you. Most customers need to look at a few different ideas, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the perfect stain to match the room. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the shutter, shade, or blind, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

After you decide on a treatment, we’ll get percise measurements of your windows. We will typically measure the windows in every room in your home—even if you only plan to fit treatments for a portion of the house. We do this because a lot of our customers ask to get future window treatments without another consultation. Finally, we will guide you through a detailed, written quote, so there are no phantom numbers on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Poor In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are sure that Sunburst will give you professional in-home consultation, there are some things you should never see from any window treatment rep. As they say, the quality of the consultation reflects the quality of the window treatments.

First, your rep should respect your home. They should come to your house when promised, clean and presentable, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your rep should always bring product and company pamphlets and pricing information.

When it comes to price, you should expect a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a large pricing range, scribbled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And always reject a quote without window measurement. You need to know how much the final bill will cost you. Also, look up references and online reviews before you place an order.
