Plantation shutters in a living room

Should My Indianapolis Home Use an Inside Shutter Mount or Outside Shutter Mount?

February 27, 2020

At your in-home shutter consultation, you’ll have to decide how your plantation shutters are installed. You could select an inside mount, which sits just inside the window recess. Or you can use an outside mount, where your shutter frame is secured outside the window ingress and is hidden by decorative trim.

Many times the option of an inside mount or outside mount is controlled by your window type. But sometimes the choice is yours to match your design scheme. So, when should you utilize an inside or an outside mount?

When You Should Use an Inside Mount in Your Indianapolis Home

Inside Shutter Mount Style

As the name suggests, an inside shutter mount is fastened on the inside of the window panel. Inside mounted shutters use either a Z-Frame or an L-Frame. The Z-Frame is connected inside the frame but has a slight lip around the window which gives it a neat, polished look. An L-frame lies level to the wall, without any extra finishing trim.

If your window can use an inside mount, the choice for this frame option is mostly cosmetic. However, windows that don’t have fairly square corners may want to use with a Z-frame. The overhang on a Z-frame will hide the window’s imperfections. The Z-frame is also nice for windows that have a tilt functionality. L-frames perform best when your window has decorative trim or you want to maintain a conservative look for your window.

When You Should Use An Outside Mount in Your Indianapolis Home

Outside Shutter Mount Style
An outside mount connects onto the wall and hangs over the window frame instead of within it. The mounts are in an L-frame and contains its own trim, so the shutter’s fixtures will still be stylishly secluded. The shutters open and close just like they would with an inside mount, and as a result of the trim, your visitors won’t even notice the difference.

If your windows are hollow and lack a deep frame, you will have to utilize an outside mount. They also work well when you need a piece of decorative trim around the window to make it pop a little more. Many unique windows with unusual window frames, like arches or ovals, will need an outside mount, and also shutter treatments for patio and french doors.
