Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Indianapolis

Bill Burke

While there are many faux wood plantation shutters available in Indianapolis, they all won’t age the same.  While some faux wood coverings will last virtually forever without chipping, warping, or fading, other faux wood shutters will start to break down in just a few years.

It can be hard to tell the different faux wood plantation shutters apart.  But after you learn about the different types of faux wood, it will be easier to tell which interior shutter will stand the test of time.

The following list examines the different types of faux wood shutters in Indianapolis and orders them from the the least durable to the most best:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some window treatments that use vinyl show themselves as faux wood.  But don’t fall for it, vinyl should not be considered faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and slick coating is hard to match to a your decor, unlike some other faux wood or hardwood shutters.  Vinyl may be one of the cheapest plantation shutter products on the market, but you get what you pay for.

Vinyl can also be easily affected by heat. It’s not unusual to see vinyl window treatments melt or discolor due to sunlight exposure. Because of their habit of warping or splitting and their poor insular qualities, vinyl shutters don’t give much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if the shutter uses hollow shutters.

  • Benefits:

    Cheapest of the non-wood shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Looks like plastic; thin materials; hollow louvers; low energy efficiency; can quickly warp, splinter or fade.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

An improvement from vinyl shutters are synthetic plantation shutters.  These window treatments are constructed from pressed wood, wood chip materials, or glued MDF, and then bound with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The shutters have more weight and can seem much more like a normal wood plantation shutter than their less durable alternatives.

But, synthetic wrapped shutters have plenty of cons. The pressed grain under the covering can be extremely porous, leaving the window treatment exposed to humidity and moisture. It’s commonplace to see a warped or cracked louver or learn that the vinyl wrapping has chipped or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters aren’t custom-fitted for specialty shaped windows like arches or octagons.

  • Benefits:

Thicker than vinyl shutters; can resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not preferable for high humidity or high moisture climates. Will take in moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; wrapping can chip away; warps or cracks easily; no custom shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters made from solid extruded synthetic materials are more durable than all of the other faux wood plantation shutters.  Because the synthetic fibers infuse themselves throughout the window treatment, they have more substantial, solid louvers that are more protected from warping.  You will also see that they are more durable and will function much more like real wood plantation shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters also can be custom-fitted to fit every window shape and size -- even arches.

But a solid extruded shutter is only as durable as its faux wood formula.  Some mixtures create a frail product, which can be cracked or chipped during installation. If the faux wood composite doesn’t have a UV inhibitor, then your window treatments will fade and yellow from the sun. Some manufacturers need to paint their shutters, which also leads to chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More durable product that is most comparable to a basswood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the formulation of the faux wood composite.
