Different Faux Wood Plantation Shutters In Indianapolis

March 02, 2020

While you can find plenty of faux wood plantation shutters available in Indianapolis, they all won’t age the same.  While some faux wood coverings will last virtually forever without chipping, warping, or fading, other faux wood shutters will start to degrade in just a few year’s time.

It can be hard to understand the pros and cons of the different faux wood plantation shutters Indianapolis.  But after you learn about the different kinds of faux wood, it will be much easier to figure out which interior shutter will stand the test of time.

The following list examines the different kinds of faux wood shutters in Indianapolis and orders them from the least durable to the most best:

Vinyl Shutters:

Some window treatments that use vinyl want you to believe that they are made from faux wood.  But don’t fall for it, vinyl is not faux wood. Vinyl’s plastic look and slick veneer can be difficult to match to a your decor, unlike some other faux wood or hardwood shutters.  Vinyl may be one of the cheapest plantation shutter products on the market, but you get what you pay for.

Vinyl can also be easily affected by heat. It’s not unusual to see vinyl shutters melt or yellow due to extensive exposure to the sun. Since these treatments warp, yellow, and have poor insular traits, vinyl shutters do not provide much energy-efficiency to your home -- especially if the shutter uses hollow shutters.

  • Benefits:

    Cheapest of the non-wood shutters.

  • Drawbacks:

Looks like plastic; thin materials; hollow louvers; low energy efficiency; can quickly warp, splinter or fade.

Synthetic Wrapped Product:

An improvement from vinyl shutters are synthetic plantation shutters.  These window treatments are constructed from pressed wood, wood chip materials, or glued MDF, and then bound with a synthetic, vinyl, or plastic coating. The plantation shutters feel more substantial and can seem much more like a normal wood plantation shutter than their less durable alternatives.

However, synthetic wrapped shutters have plenty of cons. The pressed grain under the covering can be extremely absorbent, leaving the window treatment vulnerable to humidity and moisture. It’s commonplace to see a warped or cracked louver or learn that the vinyl wrapping has chipped or peeled away.  Also, wrapped shutters cannot be custom-fitted for non-standard shaped windows like arches or octagons.

  • Benefits:

Thicker than vinyl shutters; can resemble real wood.

  • Drawbacks:

Not suitable for high humidity or high moisture climates. Will take in moisture and humidity. Aren't moisture resistant; wrapping can chip away; warps or splinters easily; no custom shapes.

Solid Extruded Faux Wood Shutters:

Plantation shutters constructed from solid extruded synthetic materials are more durable than all of the other faux wood plantation shutters.  Because the synthetic fibers infuse themselves throughout the window treatment, they create more substantial, solid louvers that are more protected from warping.  You will also discover that these treatments are more durable and will act much more like real wood plantation shutters. Solid extruded faux wood shutters also can be custom-fitted to fit every window shape and size -- even ovals.

But a solid extruded plantation shutter is only as durable as its faux wood formula.  Some mixtures create a frail shutter, which can be broken during installation. If the mixture doesn’t have a UV inhibitor, then your window treatments will fade and yellow over time. Some manufacturers need to paint their products, which also invite chipping and yellowing over time.

  • Benefits:

More durable product that compares favorably to a basswood plantation shutter.

  • Drawbacks:

Quality depends on the formulation of the faux wood composite.
